Map and profile of the Saginaw and Grand River Canal.

Series 46 of record group 58-17 consists of a map and profile (ca. 1850) of the Saginaw and Grand River Canal, originally collected by the Michigan Lands Division. The Saginaw and Grand River Canal Company was incorporated in 1849. The proposed canal was to start at the "forks of the Bad River, upon the lands on either side, and through which the said canal may pass, to the bend of the Maple River, a tributary of the Grand River ..." (Public Act 165 of 1849). The map and profile document the proposed canal, which was never contructed. Covers the area of sections 1 through 7 of the proposed canal. Shows measurements of each section of the canal, location of the locks and culverts, river soil, trees, and other nature features. The map is 22 3/4" x 83 1/2" in size, with a vertical scale of 8 1/2 feet : 1 inch and a horizontal scale of 450 feet : 1 inch.
